This work is a study of the Mormon migration from Norway from its beginnings in the 1850' s up to the 1960' s , It attempts to explain the social, religious and economic trends in Norway which have affected Mormon activity. It describes their journey to "Zion" and their eventual settlement and adaptation. When the Mormon missionaries first arrived in Norway during the 18501's the way had been largely opened for them by other religious movements such as the Haugeaner movement and the Johnsonian Revival. Most of the converts were won from among those who had recently migrated to the cities from rural districts. This was probably because t!1e influence of the state Church was less Ln urban areas, where tradition and ties of kinship were also weaker. The composition of the Mormon emigrants has been in many way different from that of the general Norwegian emigrants, there being more women, children and old people. Once in Zion they adapted rapidly to the new Environment. They tended to settle in the cities of Utah where they contributed significantly to the economic, religious and cultural life. |
