Show GREEN RIVER Although the 18 projects constructed in the Green River District were less expensive than the total for six of the other seven river districts, projects in only three districts yield more water than those of the Green River District. Total cost of Green River District Construction is $ 3.2 million, about $ 750,000 more than that of projects built by the Utah Water and Power Board and Board of Water Resources in the Weber District. Green River projects develop 68,670 acre- feet of water, just short of the amount saved in the Provo River District, but well below figures for the Lower Colorado and Sevier River Districts. Water conserved in the District provides supplemental irrigation for 102,000 acres and allows cultivation of 18,000 acres of new land for the first time. After about four years in the planning stage, preliminary construction began in the summer of ' 77 for the long- awaited Long Park Dam and Reservoir in DISTRICT Daggett County. The reservoir will store 13,700 acre- feet of water to be used for irrigation, municipal and recreation purposes. The project will save an estimated 8,000 acre- feet of water annually. Design work involved a significant amount of foundation drilling, embankment stability analysis tests and digging of numerous test pits for borrow investigation. Workmen first constructed two concrete division structures and installed 2,300 feet of pipeline. Other features of the project include a system of canals, diversion dams, pipelines and stream flow control structures. Engineers planned completion of the dam itself in a single construction season beginning early in the spring of 1978. Also looming large in the future of the District is the proposed White River Dam supported by oil shale and electric cooperative interests as well as Ute Indian tribal leaders. |
