Show PROVO RIVER DISTRICT The Board of Water Resources is justly proud of the part it has played in dipping down into the groundwater reservoir in the Juab County portion of the Provo River District. Fourteen wells drilled and equipped with financing from the Board produce in excess of 18,500 acre- feet of water a year in the county where surface flows are extremely limited. This groundwater has helped turn thousands of acres of marginal dry farms into productive irrigated lands in the vicinity of Nephi and Levan. But wells are only a part of the Board of Water Resources story in Juab County. Concrete lining of canals and pipelines has helped to conserve the limited water supply in Juab County while the water is being conveyed to otherwise parched lands where the moisture nourishes some of the State's best crops. One of Utah's most impressive diversion structures is located just inside the Juab County boarder. However Juab County, unfortunately, derives little benefit from the diversion dam. It takes 250 cubic feet of water per second from the Sevier River. That flow goes into the Central Utah Water Company canal for delivery to Millard County farmers from Leamington south to Flowell. On the northeastern edge of the District is Wasatch County. Activities of the Division of Water Resources are much more varied here, involving reservoir dams, dam enlargement and dam repair, pipelines, canal and syphon and canal lining. An example of speedy Board action occurred following the failure of a small dam after near record precipitation during the winter months of 1973. The Board invested $ 68,000 in the $ 80,000 project to repair the breach in the dam so it could resume water storage quickly for the benefit of the company's water users. |
