Atwood brick yard |
Subject |
Murray City business; brick yard; bricks; clay hills; clay \ v ; making bricks |
Description |
Walter Henry Atwood, his father Simeon and his brothers, opened their own brickyard circa 1865. It was the first brickyard in Murray and in fact, one of the first in Utah. The family were brickmakers in Pennsylvannia before coming to Utah in 1862. They found an ample supply of good grade clay in Murray which was needed to make bricks. Walter's home was the first in Murray to be built from kiln dried bricks as were many houses and buildings after. |
