UNION TRUST BUILDING,LOS-ANGELES,CAL.-July 13,1911. The Secretary of the Interior, Washington, D. C. Sir: We believe that the Uinta and White River Utes,(residing in Utah) have a good cause of action against the United states for loss of their lands (about a million acres) which were cut out of their reservation and put into the uinta National forest. So far as we are able to see this case is similar to the case of the "Confederated Bands of Utes" against the United States for loss of lands put into forest reserves in Colorado and recently passed to judgment in the Court of Claims. Mr. prank Pierce, recently Pirst Assistant Secretary of the Interior, has' been a 'resident of Utah- for many years and is personally acquainted with many of the Uinta and White River Utes. Mr. Courtland C. Clements was one of counsel in the case of the "Confederated Bands of Utes" against the United States. Under all of the circumstances it would seem that we ought to be able to handle the case expeditiously and fairly both to the Indians and to the Government. |
