| Description | Original Caption: "Spring, 1959, village of Agia Eleni, near the city of Serres, Macedonia, Greece. / Sam Chianis, who was doing research for his doctoral dissertation in Greek Folk Music at the University of California, Los Angeles, and I went to Agia Eleni to record music and songs of the Anastenaria (those who sigh) firewalkers. / The Anastenaria are ethnic Greeks who come originally as refugees from Kosti, near Agathopolis (now Bulgaria) in the 1920's. They walk on fires on some feat days of the Orthodox calendar, in this case on May 21, the celebration of Agia Eleni (St. Helen) and Aghios Konstantios (St. Constantine) / In the Photograph, top are Chianis (left) and Demitri Reklos, a fine Thracian lyra player and singer, and important member of the sect.
