Description "At the jumping exhibition on Ruud Mountain, Torger Tokle competed against Alf Engen and Art Devlin of Lake Placid, New York. Tokle lived in New York and competed for the Norway Ski Club. Tokle and Alf Engen had been competing for top honors in jumping tournaments around the country for several years. Their competition continued in 1942, when Tokle jumped 289 feet at Iron Mountain, Michigan, in early March, a new American distance record, breaking the hill record of 267 feet set by Engen the prior year and Tokle's own American distance record of 288 feet set in Washington. The Sun Valley jumping hill had been built for 150-foot jumps, but the takeoff was moved 25 feet back, artificially enlarging the hill. A number of jumpers broke the old record of 166 feet. Tokle's "prodigious drive" set a new hill record of 188 feet, leaving "far behind the mark of 164 feet set by Engen, who reeled off a 175-yard jump." Tokle "is a most powerful jumper and is constantly improving. Undoubtedly he has not yet reached his ultimate peak..." After the exhibition, the jumpers jumped in group formation from two to eight in the air at one time. Lang, "Jumping Exhibition on Ruud Mountain," Sun Valley Ski Club Annual - Season 1942." This picture appeared in the Sun Valley Ski Club Report for 1942.
