Additional Information Starboard side view of the New Orleans class heavy cruiser USS Astoria (CA-34) steaming off Guadalcanal following the invasion of the Solomon Islands on 7 August 1942. The ship is in Measure 11 camouflage scheme. The USS Astoria, along with sister ships USS Vincennes, (CA-44) and USS Quincy (CA-39) would be sunk in a night surface action with Japanese warships off Savo Island on 9 August 1942. This is likely the last photo taken of the ship before it was lost in battle.
