| OCR Text | Show UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER March 22, 1989 InfoFair '89 Set for March 30 Obtaining information from around the world via computer, especially data relating to the health sciences, is being discussed at the University of Utah InfoFair ' 89 Thursday, March 30, from 9:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library and U of U College of Nursing. The seventh annual InfoFair is co-sponsored by Eccles Library, the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, the Utah Medical Association and the Utah Nurses Association. The program is free and open to the public. The opening session will provide Utah health professionals with up-to-date information on computer applications, resources and services, and will include a preview of the future roles of computers and their applications in the health sciences. InfoFair also will feature a number of exhibits which will be open from 11 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. on the lower level of the Eccles Library. Homer R. Warner, M. D., Ph. D., professor and chairman of the Department of Medical Informatics at the University of Utah School of Medicine, will open InfoFair at 9:45 a.m. in room 212, College of Nursing. Three nationally-known speakers Medical Illustration Service Jerrald Roberts will teach InfoFair '89 goers how to use 35mm Express-a slide-making software supported by Medical Illustration Service and available for use at the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library. will participate in the morning seminar. Nicholas J. Belkin, Ph. D., professor of information science in the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, will discuss "Intelligent Information Retrieval"; Edward A. Fox, Ph. D., assistant professor of computer science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, will speak on "Expert- based Information Retrieval: The CODER ( Composite Document Expert/ Extended/ Effective Retrieval) Prototype"; and Alexa T. McCray, Ph. D., special expert at the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland, will explain " The Unified Medical Language System." Pierce will introduce the new computer and discuss its unique capabilities and features. An informal discussion among the three morning speakers and specialists on information access at the University of Utah is scheduled for 1:15-2: 15 p.m. in the History of Medicine Room. The discussion will focus on intelligent interfaces to information, including gateways, expert systems, user- friendly interfaces and inter-connected networks. Three afternoon workshops also are scheduled, and while there is no registration fee, space is limited and pre-registration is recommended. Call the Eccles Library Reference Department at 581-5534 to reserve space in one of the InfoFair ' 89 Work-shops. Jerrald B. Concurrently in the History of Medicine Room, Dr. Warner will discuss " Expert Sys terns," highlighting their features, capabilities, availability, advantages and limitations. "Managing Your Reprint Files," designed to provide a basis for evaluating a variety of reprint file management software programs for both the IBM-PC and the Macintosh, will be presented by Kathleen McCIoskey and Joan Stoddart, Eccles Library faculty members. The workshop is scheduled from 3:30-4:15 p.m. in Classroom AB of the library. A variety of University of Utah services and developed computer applications such as ILIAD, HyperMedia Courseware, Nursing Research Workstation, and Slice of Life Videodisc Database and Laser Disc Index will be shown. Hardware exhibitors include: Alpha Numeric Solutions, Apple, Beckman, Davis Audio- Visual, IBM, MicroCenter, NeXT and OrthoGraphics. Belkin, Ph.D., is a professor in the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies at Rutgers University. He retrieved his Ph. D. in information studies from the University of London; earned an M. L. in librarianship and a B. A. in,; Russian at the University of Washington in Seattle. His research interests include information science, artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. He will speak on "Intelligent Information Retrieval: An Overview" at the opening InfoFair session beginning at 9:45 a.m. Edward A. Fox, Ph.D., is an associate professor of computer science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. He received a M.S. and a Ph.D. in computer science from Cornell University and a B.S. in electrical engineering (computer science option) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the editor and project manager of a series of CD-ROM programs entitled Virginia Discs One, Two and Three. Dr. Fox's presentation entitled "Expert- based Information Retrieval: The CODER Prototype," will be part of the morning InfoFair session. Alexa T. McCray, Ph.D., is a special expert with the Computer Science Branch of the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications in Bethesda, Maryland. She is responsible for developing and directing the National Library of Medicine's Unified Medical Language System (UMLS)- a computer language that is natural and understand-able to all users. Dr. McCray received her M.S. and Ph D. degrees in linguistics from Georgetown University. She also holds a M.A. in German literature and language from Boston College and a B.A . in modern languages from Skid-more College. In her 9:45 a.m. presentation, Dr. McCray will discuss how the UMLS will improve access to biomedical information. |
