Description It should now be easy to identify these layers based on their appearance. Identify the circular smooth muscle, the longitudinal smooth muscle, and the connective tissue which separates them. Here the cigar-shaped nuclei of longitudinally sectioned smooth muscle cells are quite apparent. Note the circular appearance of these nuclei when cut in cross-section. UCLA Histology Collection.
