Montanans get used to the cold, but last year's Montana State College football record (won one, lost eight, finished fifth in conference) was a little too chilly for comfort. Head Coach John Mason figures to stoke things up a bit with this year's squad. The 1951 Bobcats have better blocking and a much-improved running attack. And they're stronger in the breadbasket, from tackle to tackle. Mason looks for his team from the Treasure State to give the Utes a run for their wampum tonight. Like the head man in the Ute wigwam, Mason is starting his second year in his present coaching job. Most of his men have had a year of learning the single wing system he employs, and he expects the year of experience to pay off. His green squad shaped up during the late lamented season and showed lots of hustle in 1951 spring practice. Another reason Mason feels optimistic is his coaching help. Jinx Anderson, freshman coach, will spend all his time with the varsity, since he will not have a freshman team this year. Max Kimberly is back from graduate work at Stanford to serve as line coach, and Bob Flieger, former Greeley football player and now MSC gymnastics coach, helped out during pre-season training. Mason invited 33 players back from last year's varsity and freshman squads. Sixteen of these players are lettermen - one a center, five guards, two tackles and three ends. Lettermen in the backfild include two blocking squads, a full, wing and tail back. Linemen from last year's freshman squad are being called on to anchor the center of the Montana State line, which was woefully weak in 1950. Some of last year's frosh already are regarded as the bright lights of the present team. Bobcat facts: Team elects no captain . . . Colors, blue and gold . . . Affiliation is with the six-team Rocky Mountain conference . . . Sister institution of Montana University, one of the two new members of the Mountain States Athletic Conference (Skyline Eight). From 1928 until 1937 Mason was assistant football coach and wrestling and swimming coach at the University of Colorado, where he helped develop some outstanding backs-among them Wizzer White. In 1937 he moved to Colorado School of Mines as head football coach. There his all-time won and lost average still is the best in Mines history. After a stint as lieutenant commander in the Navy in World War II, he returned to Mines for one year more, then retired from football. But he loves football too much to stay away from the game, and on March 1, 1950, became head grid coach at Montana State College. Bobcat Coaches GLEN (JINX) ANDERSON (below), who has been freshman football coach at MSC since 1949, became assistant coach of the Bobcat varsity this year, and after preseason training turns to coaching the B squad. He was one of the greatest Montana State football quarterbacks ever to wear the blue and gold and also was an outstanding basketball player. MAX KIMBERLY (below). Bobcat line coach, is a 1939 graduate of Montana State College. He coached all sports in the Kimberley, Idaho, High School from 1939 to 1941. After Navy service, he returned to Montana State in 1948 as assistant in health and physical education and as line coach. in a huddle they all agree ICE CREAM "It's Dee-lishus" DON'T FIGHT TRAFFIC! L e t ' s G~o W i t h U T O C O! I Pappy and Prospects Beginning his second year as athletic director and head football coach at the University of Utah, Jack Curtice has a team that Ute opponents should find fast and sassy. A bumper crop of standouts from last year's freshman squad hasn't hurt any. In practice the Utes look good. The next couple of hours ought to tell just how good they really are. "Pappy" Curtice got used to seeing footballs and digits fly when he set a touchdown passing record for Transylvania in 1928. He's never got out of the habit, and Curtice football was - and is - fast, tough and jazzy. Lots of leather gets chucked around under the Curtice Flying T system. While getting used to it last year the Utes won three, lost four and tied three, but scored 240 points in those ten games. Born in Glascow, Kentucky, Jack went to high school in Louisville, where he played on the mythical national championship high school football team in 1925. After his years at Transylvania he coached at West Texas State and Texas Western. His final game for Texas Western was a 33-20 victory over Georgetown in the Sun Bowl on New Year's Day, 1950. 21 Ute Assistant Coaches . . . ASSISTANT COACHES in the Utah camp are (top, left to right) Karl Schleckman, line coach: Frank Brickey, backfield coach; Henry (Whitey) Piro, end coach; and (lower) Pete Carlson, freshman coach, and Bill Jefferson, assistant freshman coach. Noble thy destiny And worthy thy acclaim, Treasured in memory Thy loved and honored name. Long may thy beacon towers O'erlook the inland sea, Below the snow-capped mountains Shine out in majesty. Long may thy light shine forth, Give vision clear and bright, Ever to conquer wrong And foster truth and right. -Mrs. Beatrice F. Stevens This Season's Downbeat. . . Ronald D. Gregory's celebrated University of Utah band worked just about as hard as the football team to get ready for tonight's game. Matter of fact, the marching band is what you might consider in mid-season form, with a couple of weeks of strenuous hoofing and tooting to its credit this fall. A pre-school contingent of TOO band members is in the ranks tonight. The Redskins' five other home games this season will feature 120 band members - not to forget Vanet Sorensen, a majorette who cuts quite a formation all by herself. PRE-GAME Band marches a ramp entrance, marches down field, and plays the National Anthem. HALF-TIME The theme, in case you haven't guessed, is "School Days." Each of the formations is accompanied by the relevant strain from the song. 1. Entrance. 2. Mortar Board. 3. The Three R's: a. Open Book - reading. b. Pencil - writing. c. 2 -|- 2 = 5 - arithmetic. Hickory Stick. Stick figure of a girl with bustle. Stick figure of a barefoot boy. Slate: I Luv U. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Monogram U-T-A-H. Everyone stands and sings "Hail Utah." 28 For Lovers of Good Food Since 1936! papri ITALIAN RESTAURANT Where Cooking Is An Art 121 SOUTH WEST TEMPLE OPEN 11:30 A.M. - 11 P.M.
