DR. A. RAY OLPIN President, University of Utah DR. DONALD R. THEOPHILUS President, University of Idaho PRESIDENTS WELCOME Idaho University's president knows the athletic set-up there about as well as anyone could. Dr. Ronald R. Theophilus, Idaho's president since 1955, was a member of the faculty athletic committee for many years before the Board of Regents tapped him to head the school. He had served as Dean of the College of Agriculture since 1946 prior to his appointment. He knows something about athletic participation, too, having played baseball and been a member of the track team as an undergraduate. Widely known through Idaho as a sportsman, agriculturist and educator, Dr. Theophilus actually is a native of Pittsburgh. He came west in 1927 as a professor of dairy husbandry at the University of Idaho and has since served as head of that department, as dean of agriculture, director of the Agricultural Experiment Station, and director of the Agricultural Extension Service. Dr. A. Ray Olpin, who will play host to the Idaho chief during these Homecoming festivities, is an athletic fan in his own right. In 1951 and 1952, he served on the special committee on athletic policy of the American Council on Education in an effort to eliminate collegiate athletic abuses. He's also taken a round-the-world tour for the State Department and is considered one of the top research men in his field as well as one of the nation's most vigorous educational administrators. It's always a pleasure for the U. to welcome its next door neighbors from the north. It's even more so today because it's Homecoming. 245 South 1st West EL9-77M For t h a t casual "CAMPUS LOOK" SWEATERS - $6.95 up ALL THE NEWEST SLIP-ON OR COAT STYLES Virgin Wool JACK FROST FOOTBALL ROBE IN A BAG $7.95 /Otigfcy^ - SCHOOL SWEATERS A SPECIALTY - S « ~ ^ " Y 1 28 R I C H A R D S STREET /wtah Woolen Mills Block Sou,h of Temple *"- UTAH'S BIGGEST SELECTION OF BUILDING MATERIALS Complete Building, Remodeling or Repair Service . . . including low-cost financing . . . available in "ONE-STOP" LUMBER: Pine, dimension, flooring, hardwoods, WAUBOARDS; Sheetroctc, fibreboards, plywood, ceiling tile. During the post war years of football, the Skyline Conference made a ruling, as did most conferences in the nation, that a player could participate his freshman year. Even with this ruling, ((3} fj> few frosh were advanced enough to make the grade, but Hal Tate was an exception. HOTEL Temple Square COFFEE SHOP AND TEMPLE VIEW DINING ROOM Old Utah athletes never die, they just join the U Men's Club. In fact, even the young ex-Utes join the U Men's Club. The Club is composed of former Utah letter-winning athletes who are interested in furthering the aims of the organization. These aims are promoting scholarships, sportsmanship, citizenship and leadership among students at the University of Utah, and developing a greater University. Activities in which the group engages include a Spring Banquet at which graduating senior letter-men are honored, a welcoming party for incoming freshmen athletes in the fall, and special luncheons and dinners honoring various football and basketball coaches of opposing universities. David L. Freed is President of the group and is assisted by Dr. Leslie Burbidge, first vice president; Fred Weidner, second vice president; Meeks Wirth-lin, secretary, and Dick Eastmond, treasurer. The organization publishes a newsletter periodically, called the U Men's News, which keeps the members up to date on activities of the Club and the fortunes of Ute athletic teams. Next meeting of the Club will be a luncheon at the Hotel Temple Square November 16 in preparation for the Colorado U game. Good Art Deserves . . . Liston consistently piled up the feared reverse off the single wing by Wyoming, a difficult trick against the hard-blocking Pokes. MERRILL DOUGLAS - was the back-field workhorse against Wyoming, carrying the pigskin 13 times for a total of 52 yards, one-third the Ute total. Douglas' work in the defensive back-field was also outstanding. U of U general admission Football Tickets T h a t S R l Q n t ! From its basement bowling alleys to the skyline-searching Panorama Room, this long-needed building is strictly Class. ,?r" -•'•*•• -Ml ,. ABOUT THE U 11 The U's new Union Building, pictured here in its final stages of con-struction, is no small potatoes - with due apologies to our Idaho friends. That crunching sound you hear comes from all the crossed fingers of people who hope it will be ready soon after today's Homecoming. Cost of the new structure ran to about $2,250,000, including furnish-ings and equipment. It is being financed by a bond issue supported by student funds so that not a dollar of state money need be used. The main cafeteria can hold 600 students - both before'and after eating. Contrary to rumor, the building has no polo field, but almost every other facility is available including 10 bowling alleys, acres of table tennis space, billiards and pool tables, barber and beauty shops (you can use them even if you're not a barber or a beauty, of course), an air-conditioned ballroom which can accommodate 1500 couples, a music-listening room, crafts workshop, student offices, publications offices, meeting rooms, and miles of dining rooms, most of which will feature on the menu plenty of crow for your political friends to eat a week from Thursday. Palatial though the building is, its managers have been carefully instructed not to try any undue empire building since everyone knows that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
