Cross Alternate Mark Maxwell 1 TODAY'S GAME Today's, 26th meeting between the Universities of Idaho and Utah began with-a,0-0 tie in 1908. The Utes-of Coach Ray Nagel hold" a 132-10 edge in the series and currently are riding a two-game winning streak with victories in Boise in 1959 and Salt Lake City in 19^2. Idaho's last win was a 27-21 triumph in Salt Lake Citv in 1958. Utah, a.member of the Western Athletic Conference, is coming off a tough home opener against Oregon State. The Vandals also opened at home against top-rated Fresno State. Nagel, now in his sixth year with the Redskins, figures that a lack of experience is the biggest problem facing him and his staff this season. The Utes lost 21 lettermen from last year's club and have 18 returnees. Of the 2,1 men gone 13 of these were considered first unit ballplayers. Actually only four players are back who played on the first unit any amount of time. This takes into consideration defensive specialists and includes more than just the 11 offensive starters. Still a question mark is Gary Hertzfeldt, a top quarterback who had to have an operation to correct a sight defect in late summer. As Ail-American prospect and one of the top passers in the Intermountain area, Hertzfeldt was playing behind junior Ernest (Pokey) Alien going into the OSU game. Other starters returning are fullback Doug Wasco end Roy Jefferson, and tackle Ed Knowles, who has switched to guard. In general the Redskins look to be bigger and faster this year. Last year they were one of the smallest clubs in the WAC. The speed must come from junior college transfers. Idaho, of course, will be out to get the victory the Vandals felt eluded them in the final second of last year's toss at Salt Lake City. Leading 21-18 with three minutes to play the Vandals punted to the Utah six inch line A 56-yard pass from Hertzfeldt to Jefferson cancelled out the 63-yard punt by Mickey Rice and the Ute's scored with a minute 25 remaining to make the final (jount 25-21 RAY NAGEL Head Coach 1908 1911 1919 1920 1921 1922 1937 1938 1939 1940 1941 1942 1947 Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho 0, 0, 0, 10, 7, 16, 9, 16, 0, 6, 7, 7, 13, Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah Utah p; 0 19 ?n n 17 n 7 0 3,1 13 26 13 6 SCORES 1948 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1962 Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho Idaho 21, Idaho 20, Idaho 13, Idaho 21, Utah 21 Utah 19 Utah 40 Utah 21 Utah 21 Utah 13 Utah 20 Utah 12 Utah 6 Utah 0 Utah 47 Utah 25 €$p* D. Former Vandals have played in all of the major leagues including the three-National, American and Canadian football leagues-in operation today. There are eight former Vandals currently active in the American and National leagues today. In addition to the men active in pro ball many more have had trials. Student Assistant Bob Ames went down to the final cut at Green Bay this fall and has been invited back for camp next season. Assistant Trainer Mike Mosolf had a try with Dallas last season. This year the pros have their eyes on at least three seniors-tackles Jim Moran and Ellery Brown and Guard Denny Almquist. Others may be drafted or signed as free agents. On the current rosters in the AFL and NFL are Jerry Kramer, all-pro guard last season and the only modern Vandal to have his number retired (64). Wayne Walker is a starting linebacker with the Detroit Lions and Tony (Art) Anderson is the starting tackle for the Chicago Bears. Stan Fanning, biggest man on the Bear squad, has played every place in the interior line. Jim Prestel is a starter for Minnesota and figured to be an All-Pro in another season or two, according to the Viking press corps. Chuck Fries didn't try pro ball until 1962 and is now in his second season with the New York Jets. Jim Norton is one of the leading punters in the American League with Houston. Reg Carolan played in the AFL all-star game last year after a good season in San Diego. The pros go back to Fitzke and Thomas (Ted) Bucklin who played with the Chicago Cards and the New York Giants. John Vesser, currently director of athletics at Idaho State, also played with the Cards. Leslie Stephens from the '26 team played with the old New York Yankees and Sam Diehl put in some time at Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis. St. Louis also signed John Norby from the '33 team. He also played with the Philadelphia Eagles, the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Willis Smith from the '33 club also signed with the Giants. In 1937 a trio of Vandals signed pro contracts. George Theissen and Stono (Stan) Pavkov signed with the Cleveland Rams. Pavkov later played with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dean Green signed with the Eagles. George Nixon was the last of the pre-war gridders to go to the pro ranks. He signed with Brooklyn in '41. In 1946 the New York Yankees signed Delmer Owens, and Bill Miklich went to the New York Giants. He was later traded to Detroit. About this time the Canadian league began to lure gridders over the border and Glenn Christian signed with Calgary in 1949. Christian held the Idaho 100-yard dash championship until last spring and still holds all of the Idaho career scoring records. In 1954 Burdett Hess went to Calgary and two seasons later Dick Foster followed. The following year Bob Dehlinger went to Toronto then to the New York Titians. He is now retired and is coaching at Boise High School. When the draft rolls around this winter the pros will have their fingers pointed at several Vandals. It's been that way for a long time and it'll stay that way so long as Idaho turns out big, strong football players. A tough ex-Marine, Matthews is a typical college guard. At 5-10 and 205 pounds he's not big enough to catch the eye of the pro scouts, but his combination of solid blocking on offense and sharp tackling on defense makes him a fixture in the Vandal line. Matthews enrolled at Idaho in 1960 and turned out for the frosh football team without invitation and strictly on a make-good basis. The second game of the season he intercepted a University of Washington pass, ran for a touchdown and earned himself a starting job he has never lost. Matthews is 24 and an education major. His home is Amesbury, Mass. Galen Rogers, one of the top ground gainers during his two varsity seasons, is a solid fullback who commands full respect of all the ball players. Faced with the weekly task of defending his first-team fullback berth, Rogers sets an example for the rest of the squad with his determination. Rogers transferred to Idaho from Columbia Basin College in 1960 and played a season as a halfback finishing second in total yards gained. He was out of school the following year, but returned last season as a fullback. Only a mid-season injury robbed him of the rushing title and he finished second again. Rogers is married and the father of the youngest child on the team. His son Galen was born Sept. 3. Rogers is 22 and is majoring in education. His hometown is Clarkston, Wash. Why They're Vandals Since 1918 "Joe Vandal" has been the trademark of University of Idaho athletics. The name was first tagged on the Idaho basketball team when they made a shambles of opposition and were being called the 'Wrecking Crew' by the press in the Northwest. Dean Edward Maslin Hulme of the College of Liberal Arts thought the Idahoans were like the Norsemen of old. Sports Editor Lloyd (Jazz) Mc- Carty, of the student newspaper, the Argonaut, agreed. He started using the appellation "Vandals" and it stuck. In 1921 the name was made official and today all Idaho teams are called Vandals. A large silver and gold Vandal head graces the front of the Student Union in glowing neon lights and the burly, be-whiskered individual can be seen throughout the campus. Forty-one years later the Vandals became charter members of the Big Sky Athletic Conference. Between those two dates there were occasional seasons of joy, a few of sadness and many of indifference. In the Big Sky, its architects hope that they have blended a league of major schools with similar backgrounds, resources and athletic programs. Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Gonzaga and the West's newest four-year college Weber State have formed the new league. Jack Friel, former Washington State basketball coach and commissioner of officials for the Pacific Intercollegiate Officiating Bureau is the league's first commissioner. League play begins this fall in football and cross country with the cross country meet billed for Moscow in early November. The Vandals will not be eligible for a league title in football this season since they only play Idaho State in the loop, but will enter the crosscountry competition. This winter a full round robin basketball league begins with an NCAA tournament bid hanging in the balance. The value of a league tieup became readily apparent when one considers last season's 20-6 basketball record that failed to attract any tournament offers. In the conference a 10-15 mark will be good enough if the 10 victories are over BSAC opponents. As new basketball Coach Jim Goddard said, "This new league is exciting. Within its structure our teams will have something at which to point, namely a tournamenfrberth." Competition is billed for 10 sports-football, crosscountry, basketball, swimming, skiing, wrestling, baseball, track, golf and tennis. Idaho will field teams in every sport but wrestling during the first season. League format for the various sports is being established by the commissioner's office and the directors of athletics of the member institutions. A league all-around championship is being formulated as well as the conference championship meets. ENJOY THE GAME MORE! Don't buck the line of traffic, stay in it. Fancy open field running doesn't pay on the highway. 2. When dusk falls and your visibility is limited, slow down and turn on your lights. What you can't see can hurt you. 3. Don't try to beat the clock by speeding. Remember, when time runs out on the highway, everybody loses.
