Dot Date Topic Background This project is significant because it will document Utah's piace in the foik music revival of the 1950s-1960s. The available research on this cultural phenomenon is mostly blind to any areas outside New York or California. And although Utah's conservative culture would seem to be immune to the revival, two of its most significant artists were from this area: Bruce "Utah" Phillips and Rosalie Sorrels. This project will focus on their contributions to the revival and also on the activities of fellow musicians with whom they worked and socialized. According to Lund and Denisoff in their 1971 article, "The Folk Music Revival and the Counter Culture: Contributions and Contradictions," the revival was integral to the political expression of the middle-class, college-aged youth during the Vietnam era. Durwood Ball argues ("Popular Music, 2001 ") that the revival was a significant piece of our social history that should not be overlooked. In his 2004 article, "Commercialism, Counterculture, and the Folk Music Revival: A Study of Sing Out! Magazine, 1950-1967," Mikiko Tachi states that individuals involved in the revival thought of themselves as different from the masses and, therefore, qualified to critique American politics and culture through music. By documenting, through oral histories and archival research, the .work of U. Utah Phillips, Rosalie Sorrels, and their colleagues, this project will demonstrate that some of that critique came from-of all places-Utah. Project Description The question addressed by this project is: How was the folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s expressed in Utah and how did Utah musicians connect to the national movement? The objectives are to research archives and to review local newspaper and magazine articles in order to understand the public perception of the folk revival in Utah. I will also conduct interviews of revival musicians in order to document their experiences and their sense of the era. The project outcomes will be my senior thesis and a scholarly paper to be presented at the WSU Symposium and submitted for publication to The Historian. I will donate copies of all tapes and transcriptions to Special Collections, Stewart Library. I will conduct this research with advice from my faculty mentor, Dr. Kathryn MacKay. Dependent _________________ X Independent (student helping faculty do research) (student doing own research) Student Qualifications I am qualified for this project because I have taken many history courses including Social History which focused on the history of ordinary people and how they were affected both by events outside of their control and by their resistence to those events. I have already completed a literature search of the scholarship of protest music. Project Methods This project will be conducted through archival research and interviews of musicians. I will research newspaper articles and magazines associated with the folk music revival scene. I have contacted the Intermountain Acoustic Music Association in Salt Lake City, the primary folk music resource in Utah, requesting their assistance in this project. Timeline March - April, 2006 Research archives at University of Utah and Utah State Historical Society Locate interview subjects and set up interview appointments May - Mid-June, 2006 Conduct interviews in: Salt Lake Valley, UT; Boise, ID (Sorrels' location), and Nevada City, CA (Phillips' location) Mid-June - August, 2006 Transcribe interviews Organize notes September-December, 2006 Write Senior Thesis Prepare manuscript for presentation Project Budget Materials Necessary: I will need at least two high quality cassette tapes per interview according to the guidelines set forth by the Southern Oral History Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (http://www.sohp.org/howto/guide/howto 11 lh.html). I expect to conduct ten interviews = 20 tapes. I want also to photograph the informants, but I will pay all film costs. Equipment/ Additional Expenses: I own a camera to be used for the photographs. The History Department owns a tape recorder that I may use for recording the interviews. The History Department also possesses a transcribing machine to which I have access. Travel Expenses: Hotel prices per night in Boise, ID and Nevada City, CA average $100.00. I will stay for two nights in each city= $400.00. I will travel in my personal car, traveling a total of 2,325.2 miles, and am requesting the mileage rate of $.32 per mile= $744.06. I am also requesting the per diem rate of $36.00 for a total of four days = $144.00. Student Stipend: I will not be attending Summer Semester this year. (12 credits = 180 hours of class work) I also will not be working for wages. Thus, I can devote full time to research. I am requesting a stipend of $10.00 per hour for some research time and interviewing = 50 hours. I will also spend time transcribing the interviews. At a standard time of five hours of transcribing for every one hour of interviewing, I will be working 50 hours. This totals 100 hours = $1 ,000.00. This amount will be paid to me upon completion of the project. 2005-06 WSU UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH BUDGET WORKSHEET Department or Outside Persona! Funds Undergrad. How long and in what capacity have you known this student? Ms. Bott has been a student of mine this academic year. 2. Briefly describe the proposed project. Is this part of a larger research project? Is this part of a course? If so, how is the project apart from the nature and scope of activities normally taken for the course (Please attache a copy of your course syllabus)? This project is not part of a class-although it will become the basis for Ms. Bott' s senior thesis. This project came out of scholarship Ms. Bott found intriguing in a social history class. 3. Give an assessment of the project's significance to the student's discipline and of the project's educational and/or professional benefit to the student. There is new scholarship available to Ms. Bott on this topic from a national perspective. Ms. Bott can make a contribution to that scholarship. This project will allow her to develop her research and writing skills in preparation for the graduate work she intends to pursue. 4. Comment on the qualifications of the student to successfully complete this project, both in terms of the project's scope and its time frame. Ms. Bott has the abilities and the determination to successfully complete this project. She is a hard worker and a committed learner. 5 . Comment on the justification and appropriateness of the project budget, including the necessity of a stipend (if requesting one) . The budget is modest. Ms. Bott is using her own resources for much of the work. A stipend is justified in support of the hard work of interviewing and transcribing. 6. Describe your role in the project. I will advise Ms. Bott on research strategies. At my suggestion, she has already consulted with John Sillito, who has some connections with Utah Phillips. 7. Include anything else that you think will be helpful to the committee in evaluating this application. Ms. Bott is a fine student, self motivated and tenacious. She will do good work!
