Description Denver and Rio Grande Western RR train #8, The Prospector, at the Salt Lake Union Depot, June, 1962. Depot shared by the Rio Grande and Western Pacific Railroad. The Prospector was a Salt Lake City to Denver train #8 east-bound and #7 west-bound. Combined with trains #1 and #2 the Royal Gorge, west of Grand Junction, Colorado. The Prospector used the more direct Moffat Tunnel route while the Royal Gorge used the Royal Gorge route which also served Pueblo and Colorado Springs, but was 175 miles longer.
