Description |
Chinaman's Arch, on east side of Promontory along the old right of way. Only monument to the thousand or more Chinese who lost their lives through this section in winter of 1868-69 by accident, disease and overwork. It was near here that the Irish of the U.P. cut two flat cars loaded with Chinese workers from a train letting them roll back down the hill, killing and injuring most of the crews. Also near here the Irish laid a "grave" of dynamite on the Central Pacific grade killing a Chinese crew. Sgt. Wm. C. Sackett, Utah State Highway Patrol, Brigham City, in foreground. Donor and Photog: Bernice Gibbs Anderson, 1957. Used in U.H.Q. April, 1961. |
