Description State: Utah. Medal: Medal of Honor for Indian War Veterans. Authority: A Bill, Chapter 86 of the Laws of Utah 1905. Spproved by the Governor on March 9, 1905. General: Awarded to each veteran of the Indian Wars who actually served in surpressing hostilities in Utah during the years of 1850 through 1872. While most of the activity involved the Utes, there were campaigns against the Pieds, Piutes and Navajo. A contract to produce 1400 medals was awarded to the Salt Lake City Stamp COmpany. An Additional 200 medals may have been ordered based on reports that the initial supply was running low. All medals were issued with the recipients name impressed on the rverse. The office of the Secretary of State was responsible for distribution and application forms were made available to veterans. Description: The medal is bronze and is in the shape of an eleven point star 44.5 mm in diameter. It is suspended from a bronze bar by a silk ribbon. The obverse contains the State seal within a circle with the words Utah Indian War Veteran surrounding it. Above is a shield with an eagle perched atop forming the base for the fixed suspension ring.. The reverse is plain except for the words Presented By / The State of Utah / To with a rectangualr area for recipients name. The bar is 8x44mm with an Indian in full headress in the center extending above and below the bar. To the left is the date "1850" and to the right "1872". the ribbon is 34 mm. in equal stripes of red, white and blue. Margrave, Anthony R.; The Medal Collector. Douglas W.
