Text of marker: "On July 15 1884 a posse of U.S. soldiers or scouts and cowboys chased a group of Piute Indians to this area. The Piutes stopped on the rock shelf defying the white men to come on. The posse took shelter under a rim. It was on a dare that U.S. Scout Worthington and a cowboy named Wilson rushed out to fight. They were shot at the foot of the trail and lay there all day in the blazing sun calling for water. The other members of the posse were unable to carry water to them as the Piutes came down and set their wolf-like dogs on the two fallen men. The Indians stripped these two white men of everything they fancied, such as hats, guns and boots. Meanwhile the posse was able to retreat, retracing the trail to Verdure. -- Utah State Road Comm." |
