Description UP engine 2206 2-8-2 type (heavy) Nampa, Idaho, 1945. U.P. owned several hundred of this type on the system. They were known as "Mikado" type for the reason that the first engines of this wheel arrangement were built for Japan about 1910. During World War II they became known as "MacArthur" type for obvious reason. They were work horses of the system for a good many years. Almost all other important railroads had engines of this type. The device on top of smoke stack is a smoke deflector to keep smoke from drifting down into eyes of engine crew when passing through tunnels. Gift of Arthur Petersen.
