Abstract This paper describes the design and operation of the Riley-Takuma combustion system for Muncipal Solid Wastes (MSW). Fuels such as MSW have widely variable heating values, moisture contents, and size distributions. Refuse firing systems, therefore, require flexible combustion control systems to insure complete combustion and to minimize the formation of pollutants such as CO, NOx and organic emissions. The Riley-Takuma system includes three grates, with individual undergrate air controls, designed to promote fuel drying, combustion, and burnout. Multiple levels of OFA jets in the furnace are used to control mixing and temperature above the grate. An automatic combustion air control system provides the flexibility to burn a variety of MSW fuels regardless of source, season, or geographic origin. In MSW systems, the primary purpose of overfire air is to promote turbulent combustion above the grate, to enhance burnout and to destroy trace organic species. However, these conditions have been found to enhance the formation of NOx. Data are presented and discussed on methods of NOx control which have been tested in Japan. Results of recent field tests on a commercial MSW combustor are presented and the effects of overfire air are discussed. Current research efforts on applying natural gas co-firing technology to the Riley-Takuma combustion systems are also described.
