The new Safeway store opened in Vernal on December 16, 1950. It was located at 166 West Main where the present day Dinah Bowl is now located. At the Grand Opening they gave away the following gifts: A new 1951 home freezer, 25 baskets of groceries, orchids for the ladies and many more gifts. The store cost approximately $75, 000. The visitors inspected the new store with its streamline shopping and new facilities. It was 7500 square feet in size. Local contractors hired were: Bus Hatch, General Contractor; Glen Knight of Modern Heating provided the heating and ventilating; Milton Hacking for the plumbing; W.S. Mann handled the paint work and Lamond Tullis, the electrical installations. William Gurr supplied the ready mixed concrete. Four of the latest T-type checkstands will insure a speedy checkout. Wes Cochran present an toaster oven to a lucky prize winning couples. |
