This consortium was formed by the administrators of Utah's college and university libraries, WHY UCLC WAS ORGANIZED UCLC was established for the purpose of cooperation: to share information and ideas, to increase patron access to the services and collections of the academic libraries of Utah, to combat mount-ing problems that threaten the quality of academic library services, and to make more efficient use of available library funds. HOW THE UCLC APPROACH WORKS UCLC holds regularly scheduled meetings in September, October, November, January, February, March, April, and July. The Council conducts much of its work through committees which report their deliberations and recommendations to the Council for consideration and possible implementation. In keeping with the theme of coperation and service, the Utah College Library Council continued making advances in that direction during the past year. OUR KEEPING PACE WITH NETWORKING ACCOMPLISHMENTS With the almost staggering growth rate of knowledge and information, tremendous emphasis and importance has been placed upon Networking. libraries are now looking at Networking as a means to keep pace with the knowledge and information explosion while at the same time provide increased service to its patrons. Through devoting much time and effort, UCLC has and is continuing to make a significant contribu-tion in keeping its members informed of the latest developments and services networking utilities can offer Utah's academic libraries individually and/or as a consortium. POOLING RESOURCES AND SHUTTLE SERVICE UCLC continued to follow established programs through which students, faculty, and staff of any member institution may in person or through interlibrary loan borrow materials from any library in the system. This interlibrary cooperation was improved during the past year with the implementation of an intranstate Shuttle Service. Member libraries now enjoy and may participate in a shuttle service which transports interlibrary loans as well as any other requested library-related material between member institutions. This shuttle operates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Interlibrary Services, 1974-75 Interlibrary Loans 5736 Walk-in Circulation 3930 JOINT PURCHASES UCLC members added a new program designed to help maximize funds during the past year with the implementation of a Joint Purchase Program. By pooling individual purchases of similar library sup-plies and operating materials into one single order, participating members realized a significant savings. In addition to this new program, UCLC con-tinued to maintain close communication in efforts to avoid duplicate purchase of rarely used expensive research sets, collections or individual publications available to scholars within the state. INSERVICE TRAINING UCLC financially supported a training work-shop designed to increase knowledge and skill con-cerned with computer-based information retrieval systems. UCLC also continued to encourage and financ-ially support a personnel exchange program, allowing library personnel to visit their counterparts at other institutions in order to share professional experiences and methods of operation. FINANCIAL Annual dues for member libraries is based on REPORT Library size in terms of number of volumes. Those libraries with 500,000 volumes or more pay $200.00 per year, while those libraries with less than 500,000 volumes pay $100,00 per year. Income and expenditure for the year ending September 30,1975 INCOME EXPENDITURES Balance Forward (Shown in Income section and Unexpended Balance shown in expenditure section) Income from dues Printing Costs Inservice training costs Operating expense Workshop Interlibrary loan $1,275.00 $1,207.51 $1,078.97 $700.00 $86.97 FUTURE It seems a fair conclusion that 1975-76 affords PROSPECTS UCLC another year of challenge, problem solving, and an agenda designed to increase and improve services within the academic libraries of Utah. However, as UCLC looks forward to another year of advancement through cooperation, it should be remembered that while UCLC has implemented many new programs through joint effort, cooperation has it limits. It is the responsibility of each library to move ahead on an individual basis in the areas determined best for that particular library. In addition, each library has the responsibility of seeking sufficient funds to support the major academic programs on its campus. |
