This consortium was formed by the administrators of Utah's college and university libraries. Why UCLC Was Organized UCLC was established for the purpose of cooperation: to share information and ideas, to increase patron access to the services and collections of the academic libraries of Utah, to combat mounting problems that threaten the quality of academic library services, and to make more efficient use of available library funds. How the UCLC Approach Works UCLC holds regularly scheduled meetings during each school year. The Council conducts much of its work through committees which report their deliberations and recommendations to the Council for consideration and possible implementation. In keeping with the theme of cooperation and service, the Utah College Library Council continued making advances in that direction during the past year. OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS Interlibrary Loan Through its thrice-weekly visitation, the UCLC shuttle bus continued to transport requested or personally borrowed items to and from cer-tain member libraries. Those libraries more remotely removed from the metropolitan areas are serviced by the U.S. mail system. During the year 5,927 volumes were loaned between institutions. Inserviae Training UCLC financially supported three librarians on visits to member institutions in order for them to share professional experiences with their colleagues and to observe methods of operation. Joint Purchase Five colleges and universities in the consor-tium realized a significant savings in the combined purchase of supplies for their library security system. In addition, UCLC continued to maintain close communication in efforts to avoid duplicate purchase of rarely used or expensive research items. Union List of Seriate Progress was made toward the reproduction of a Union List of Serials for the state of Utah. In this connection, UCLC sponsored a member of the Serials Committee in her attendance at the ALA summer convention and certain precon-ference Institutes to ascertain latest infor-mation on the subject on a national basis. Utah Publications Retrieval System (UPES) UPRS was established to index and make avail-able to libraries within the state, either in hard copy or microfiche, a copy of the official publications of all agencies of state and local governments in Utah, including pub- lications of some private foundations and institutions. It is anticipated that about 1000 items per year will be indexed. Bicentennial Bookmobile To commemorate the Bicentennial, certain libraries, associations, commissions and boards, sponsored a traveling Bicentennial Bookmobile exhibit. Although UCLC was not a sponsoring agent as such, it gave favorable response to the idea and lent support in many ways. The University of Utah Library supplied the documents; the State Library Commission furnished the bookmobile and the driver; the Utah American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and other organizations provided much of the financing. The exhibit was officially unveiled in the atrium of the University of Utah Library on Monday, November 4, 1975. It started its tour on January 16, 1976 with a ribbon cutting by the Governor at the state capital. The book-mobile will continue into 1977 until every library and secondary school in the state has been visited. UCLC Brochure The Public Services Committee produced a brochure advertising the benefits of UCLC to all library patrons, especially the benefits of interlibrary loan and reciprocal borrowing. FUTURE PROSPECTS As in past years 1976-77 will likely be a year complete with new problems, continuation of current activities and completion of special projects. In all of these areas UCLC is taking a positive. role, one which will improve library collections and services for library users throughout the state. However, as UCLC fulfills this role, it cannot take the place of strong individual libraries. Each library must continue to develop in the areas determined best for its own community and it must seek and obtain sufficient funds to support its programs. FINANCIAL REPORT Annual dues for member libraries is based on library size in terms of number of volumes. Those libraries with 500,000 volumes or more pay $200 per year, while those libraries with less than 500,000 volumes pay $100 per year. Income and expenditure for the year ending September 30, 1976 $1,400.00 $1,078.97 Dues Balance Forward $2,478.97 Total Income $416.96 Total Expenses $2,062.01 Balance on Hand September 1, 1976 |
