Sir: This office is in receipt, by department reference, of a report hy Hr.. Cyrus C.Badd, of the U. S. Geological survey, upon Irrigation matters of.the Uintah Indian Reservation. _Ee states £kz± in his report that-for-a number of years, water has been diverted from certain tributaries on upper Strawberry creek, within the Indian Reservation, carried across the divide and turned into Daniels Creek, whence it finds its way -downward and .is again diverted and used on lands in the vicinity of Heber; that these diversions were made "hy white settlers in trie latter valley without the co-t-seirc or aucnorxzaoioir or .HE j_nc__Em ^_gen,_ cr Department of the Interior; that there are three ditches thus diverting water,-Strawberry ditch, TTillow Creek ditch and Hobble Creek ditch. He states that Strawberry ditch is three miles long with an estimated capacity of 200 minersSS inches; that its probable cost was £12,000; that it is in fairly good condition, that "willow Creek ditch will carry about 60 miners' inches, that it is 7 miles long and cost not less than £15,000; that it has a tunnel 1000 feet long which is considerably out of repair at the present time; that it will cost about $3000, to put it in good condition, that the Hobble Creek ditch is a good cheap one and in good repair, being about two miles in length with an estimated capacity of 50 miners! .inches. In view of the statements made by lar.Babb, you will investigate as to the authority or pretended authority under which these ditches were constructed upo.-_ the reservation. Von will report whether the water diverted in the mariner indicated is a detriment to the Indians now or is lir-rely in your opinion to be so in the future; whether in your judgment these ditches upon the reservation should be allowed to remain open and diversion of water |
