Sir: In October last I received Department letter aatea Sept. 27, 1892, (Land 32^22-1892) directing me to permit one tieorye Darling to drive a band of sheep across Uintah reservation upon the payment of a reasonable compensation and, in case the Indians should give their consent. About February first I met Mr. Darling at fort Duchesne, who spoke to me of the matter, and declarea his willingness and intention topay any sum charged for crossing. Upon February 4, I directed Mr. Wayman, Agency Farmer, to call upon Mr. Darling at Fort Duchesne, ana collect $125.00 as transit fee. Mr. Wayman failed to find Mr. Darling at the fort and left a note stating the amount demanded. Nothing was heard, of Mr. Darling or his sheep after this until last evening, when Mr. Wayman, returning from Price, heara that the sheep in question had succed&d in crossing the reservation without the payment of any fee. Today Mr. Darling was seen in regard to the matter and stated.. i |
