My dear Mr. Commissioner: Under date of June 6, 1924, authority was granted for the expenditure of $3500 (reference numbers shown above) in the purchase of material and the employment of labor to construct a cottage at the proposed Day School plant in Allen Canyon. After receiving this authority the material bid on by the two firms was immediately ordered and a trip made at once to Allen Canyon which is about two hundred miles, twenty-five of which has to be made on horseback, but through failure to locate any men there suitable to proceed with the work of construction nothing further was accomplished than the delivery, of the material purchased, to the cottage site. The balance of the money, about $2875, reverted back under unexpended balances at the end of the year June 30, 1924. Therefore it is respectfully requested that this amount be allotted for use during the present fiscal year from the fund "Indian Moneys, Proceeds of Labor, Ute Mountain Indians" or other applicable fund. Also authority granted to proceed at once with this work so that it may be accomplished before the severe winter weather begins. The rates for labor not to exceed the following for which it is thought possible to obtain competent workmen: Carpenters - - -$ 6.00 per day Common labor - - 4.00 " " Team & driver - - 5.00 " " Very respectfully, E.E. McKean, Superintendent |
