Show Congress of the United States House of Representitives Washington, D.C. Salt Lake City, April 13, 1923. Hon. Chas. H. Burke, Commissioner of Indian Affairs Washington, D. C. My Dear Mr. Commissioner: I know much has been said to you concerning the situation of the Indians in San Juan County, Utah. These poor fellows are in a bad way and I think something ought to be done at once. It appears they have no home nor place of refuge. We have simply made them outlaws. On the other hand, the white settlers there have been patient with them but unless something is now done there will be serious difficulty. The settlers are getting tired of their depradations. Some man of judgment and skill could be sent there and, I beileve, settle with them. It seems to me the government should purchase these a home. I believe a suitable home can be found at a reasonable cost. I do hope something can be done before it is too late. I shall be glad to cooperate in any way possible. Sincerely yours, Don B. Colton |
