Letter to Mr. Herbert H. Stacher from E. B. Meritt Assistant Commissioner

Mr. Herbert H. Stacher Tohatchi, New Mexico. My dear Mr. Stacher: The Office has taken some pains to secure information con­cerning the best kind of school facilities for the Ute children living in the vicinity of Allen Canyon about whom you wrote in your letter of January 27. I t appears that during a considerable portion of the school year it would be impossible to maintain a large enough attendance to warrant a day school at Allen Canyon. Possibly you are not aware that under the law a school which does not have an average attendance of eight throughout the year is automatically closed. Moreover, a school with a very low attendance is so expensive that the Office is unable to spare funds as this reduces the amount available for schools having more children. Under the circumstances it appears best to continue the present plan of receiving Ute children in boarding schools when they cannot attend the public schools or the Allen Day School.
