Additional Information |
Image was scanned from color slide. Image of object can also be found in: Carved Paper: The Art of Japanese Stencil by Susanna Kuo, p. 83. Note: "Katagami...or Ise-katagami is the Japanese art of making paper stencils [to be used in the process of putting designs on textiles]. The art is traditionally centered around the city of Ise in Mie Prefecture. Multiple layers of thin washi paper are bonded with a glue extracted from persimmon, which makes a strong flexible brown colored paper. The paper is cut with a combination of knives and punches. Four principal cutting techniques are used."--Wikipedia. Note: "Kiri Bokashi ('graduated dots') [is] the effect of shading created by increasing the concentration of dots. Graduating the size of the dots is another way to suggest shading in a stencil pattern."--Carved Paper: The Art of Japanese Stencil by Susanna Kuo, p. 222. Note: "Katazome...is a Japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a stencil."--Wikipedia. |
