Caption on Slide "Self-Portrait of Danjuro VII in a Shibaraku Performance" by Ichikawa Danjuro VII (Japanese, 1791-1859), surimono, ink and color on paper (mica and brass dust), Edo period (1615-1868). The actor has portrayed himself ensconced in his Shibaraku robes and has signed Ichikawa Danjuro at the lower left.

They were privately commissioned for special occasions such as the New Year. Surimono literally means "printed thing". They were most popular from the 1790s to the 1830s, and many leading artists produced them."--Wikipedia.
