Emperor Ming-huang was then forced to flee the capital, and he traveled to seek refuge in Szechwan. In this painting, the figure wearing red clothing in the lower right corner apparently is the emperor. Astride a horse with a braided mane, he rides along a mountainous path near towering peaks dotted with trees and interlaced with clouds. The emperor's horse proceeds through the scene with other figures and travelers. The brushwork used for outlining the forms here is exquisite and taut, and mineral blue and green colors give it a dazzling jeweled effect. Some scholars believe that this painting is a faithful copy of a T'ang original done by a Sung dynasty (960-1279) artist."--National Palace Museum website.
