Its name means East Temple, and it once had a partner, Sai-ji (West Temple). It was formally known as Kyoogokokuji Temple. Tō-ji was originally founded in the early Heian period, approximately 796.--Wikipedia. Note: There are several halls at Tō-ji Temple, including the lecture hall (Kodo), the main hall (Kondo) and the founder's hall (Miedo).--Japan Guide website.
