Image was scanned from color slide. Caption is from photographer's notes on slide. "Port of Uno: An important location in marine transportation on the Inland Sea, this port was originally used for the importing of stone for the construction of Okayama Castle. Construction was completed in 1909 to make it a railway and ferryboat terminal. Since the beginning of operation of ferryboat lines, it has served as a connecting port that links up Honshu and Shikoku. It has developed today in to an important international trading port, and over 90% of the cargo goods that it handles are accounted for by ferries. It is undergoing development such as the construction of breakwaters and quays for large passenger liners, in order to make it a waterfront operating 24 hours a day."--http://japan-cruise.com/ports/uno.html |
