Caption on Slide Torii, Meiji Shrine, Tokyo, Japan.
Additional Information Image scanned from color slide. Note: Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingū, 明治神宮,) is a shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken. Meiji Shrine and the adjacent Yoyogi Park make up a large forested area within the densely built-up city of Tokyo. The shrine was completed and dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and the Empress Shoken in 1920, eight years after the passing of the emperor and six years after the passing of the empress. The shrine was destroyed during the Second World War but was rebuilt shortly thereafter. Emperor Meiji was the first emperor of modern Japan.--Japan Guide website. Note: Torii, which literally translates to bird perch, is a gate usually found at the entrance to a Japanese Shinto shrine, or in some cases inside the shrine. Torii are considered the simplest way to identify a Shinto shrine. They are also sometimes found at the entrance to Japanese Buddhist temples.
