Subject Optic Neuropathy
Description Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can visualize retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) loss in non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). While thickness maps are used to evaluate structural changes associated with edema and atrophy, RNFL en-face images may provide additional textural information (e.g., showing regionally lower intensity but hyperreflectivity on vessels) that precedes changes in thickness, as an earlier sign of neuron damage when intervention may improve outcome.
