Description Driving is an activity of daily living with important implications for quality of life, healthcare utilization and mortality. Driving ability is based on a complex interplay between visual input, cognitive decision making and physical ability. It is important for ophthalmologists to be aware of the decision-making processes that govern driving performance, the medical conditions that put a driver at risk and possible compensatory techniques that may mitigate this risk. States in the United States have varying visual function criteria for driving license eligibility. Predicting driving safety is a challenging and complex topic and may require driving evaluation by a driving rehabilitation specialist.
