BACKGROUND The original iteration of the NANOS Neuro-Ophthalmology Curriculum was published in the Journal of NeuroOphthalmology (JNO) in 2006 (1). At the same time, the Neuro-Ophthalmology Virtual Education Library (NOVEL) was being built as an online, open-access, multimedia repository of neuro-ophthalmology education materials, through a collaborative effort between NANOS and the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library (EHSL) at the University of Utah (2). In spring of 2017, the NANOS Illustrated Curriculum was developed by linking learning resources from NOVEL to the curriculum outline and published by Teton Data Systems (TDS) on their online STAT!Ref platform. 2020 NORTH AMERICAN NEUROOPHTHALMOLOGY SOCIETY CURRICULUM UPDATE The latest iteration of the NANOS Curriculum was updated and published in the JNO in 2020 (3). The 2020 NANOS Curriculum update, designed by a NANOS Curriculum Committee Task Force, included revisions to all sections of the curriculum previously written in 2006. Sections were updated to include recent developments, redundant items were eliminated, and items were streamlined to make them relevant to neuro-ophthalmologists from different training backgrounds and consistent with the United States and international training requirements. The goal of the curriculum was to provide a framework that defines the scope of work expected of a practicing neuro-ophthalmologist (3). FIG. 1. NANOS IC cover. Where learning objects were lacking, editors searched NOVEL for existing items, and added new material as appropriate. Topics with inadequate learning materials are considered “gaps” in the knowledge base. Editors created many new learning objects, and recruited colleagues, fellows, residents, and medical students to create more learning objects. All objects are then reviewed by the NOVEL Editorial Board. To facilitate the filling of gaps, a shared document was created that keeps track of all gaps and allows creators to sign up to cover topics. UPDATED NORTH AMERICAN NEUROOPHTHALMOLOGY SOCIETY ILLUSTRATED CURRICULUM After the publication of the 2020 NANOS Curriculum update, the NANOS IC was completely revised and updated by a group of volunteers. See Figure 1. Twenty-seven NANOS members were recruited as Section Editors and Associate Editors and were responsible for specific sections within the IC. The NANOS IC is also published on the STAT!Ref Platform. To share this resource with your colleagues, fellows, residents, and students, a license to the STAT!Ref version should be purchased. Licensing is typically performed through your academic health sciences library. Individual licenses are also available. Various stakeholders identified the need for more basic clinical skills curriculum designed for other physicians, nurse practitioners, rehabilitation specialists, and allied ophthalmic personnel. Thus, NANOS Neuroophthalmology Techniques of Examination (NANOS NOTE) for non–neuro-ophthalmologists were created (Fig. 1). First, a “needs assessment” was conducted to try and assure maximum relevance to the targeted audience.
