Researcher/Organization: Elizabeth Giraud, AICP, UDOT Date: 4/5/2010 Building Style/Type: Minimal TraditionallWWII-Era Cottage Foundation Material: Concrete block No. Stories: Wall Material(s) : :....-=------- Vinyl siding ----------------Alterations: _none---~-~~-----------_ minor (describe below) Additions: _none _minor _major (describe below) ~major Number of associated outbuildings _1__ and/or structures __. Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The subject property is located on the northern border of Ogden and Harrisville, on the southeast comer of Wall and North streets and faces west (photo 1). The house is Minimal Traditional in style and WWII-Era Cottage in type. The house is onestory and side-gabled, with a 6/12 roof pitch. The massing of this one-story dwelling is roughly divided in half, with the southern half of the west (front) wall recessed about 1 foot and the roofline about 6 inches shorter than the northern half. The house has an asphalt roof and a chimney is placed on the west slope where the roofline differs in height. The vinyl siding is used on all wall surfaces, breaking between the gable ends and the wall surface only in color. The foundation is concrete block (photo 2). The house has two entrances. The primary entrance is a single door access on the west fa'Yade, and is protected from the elements by a four-stair concrete porch with a gable overhang and wrought-iron railing. The secondary entrance is a single door on the rear elevation, access with a one-step concrete slab (photo 3). A handicapped ramp provides access to the front elevation, and extends across the southern half of the western elevation. Fenestration consists of two picture windows on the west elevation, with wood muntins broken into an unusual pattern (see attached photographs). The muntins appear to be wood but the application of storm windows has rendered the planes between the windows and the wall planes as one flat surface. This is characteristic of all the window openings, which generally consist of one-over-one, vertically oriented windows on the other elevations of the residence. The garage is covered with similar vinyl siding. It is located toward the rear of the lot, south of the house. It appears to have once been a one-car garage, but what would have been the vehicular opening has been filled in, either as a smaller opening or closed off altogether, with wide, vertical siding. A four-panel man door is visible on the north elevation of the garage. Vehicles park under the metal carport that extends from the garage toward Wall Street (photo 4). The house is located in an area whose land uses are transitioning from residential to big-box commercial. Wall Street, the major arterial on which the residence is located, has been widened many times, and the residences across the street are now so far away that they fail to convey a visual relationship to the subject house. To the north, the homes are a mixture of older structures in good repair, but for the most part they are dilapidated to the point that their integrity has been compromised. Directly east of the subject property is an expansive parking lot that serves a Buddhist temple.
