INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF IRIAN JAYA Bacteriological Studies “Engineers operate at the boundary between science and society.” One of the most exciting things about engineering is the variety! Chemical engineers work in the aerospace industry helping to build rockets and propulsion systems, they work on alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power and are very active in the movement toward green engineering, they improve life through their work on biochemical processes, as well as producing and inventing everyday products such as cosmetics. The only people that create wealth are engineers and scientists. We are in a (engineering and scientist) crisis situation and we have been in it for a long time. Students need to be energized for science and math; they need inspiration.” Jeff Kodosky, co-founder, National Instruments MESA Works! “MESA is highly effective in training a diverse workforce in the technical skills that we need.” Edward A. Taylor, Google “MESA produces quality engineers and scientists that are urgently needed in a technology-based company like Chevron.” Brenda Mize, Chevron “ MESA brings along students who are able to stay abreast of fastpaced technological changes.” Yno Gonzalez, AT&T 14 MESA Club 2006 What comes after MESA? Creativity Basic understanding of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Math General writing and communication skills University of Utah Chemical Engineering Class of 2008 Knowing how to learn and find what you don’t know A desire to make the world a better place. There are so many opportunities to make this world better with engineering, from creating vaccines to cure disease to developing alternative energy sources. Engineers are vital in the improvements to make people healthier or just happier. Creativity. Like that quote said in the beginning “Engineers create that which has never been.” In engineering, we get to be creative in the solutions we design and in the ways we apply science. Basic understanding of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Math. Chemical engineering does involve a lot of math and science because we need a basic understanding to reapply these concepts to make products. General writing and communication skills. One of the most important and necessary parts of engineering is conveying our information to others, especially those who might not have a technical background. We have to be good at developing arguments and explaining our reasoning and findings. Knowing how to learn and find what you don’t know. Engineers are geniuses. We are continuously faced with new challenges and things we don’t quite understand or just plain don’t know. But it’s the ability to use your resources and go out and find this information that makes the best engineers. 17 SHPE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Student Chapter 1992 2009 Conclusion • Students – decide what you want to do with your life (there are no limitations) – education is the key – MESA can help • Make a difference in the world – at the end of your life ask yourself – Is the world a little better because of me? • Parents – you are doing a great job (just by being here), keep supporting your kids, they really need you • Success is not how much money you make, but how many people you have helped in your lifetime.
