| OCR Text | Show Ph.D. PROGRAM IN NURSING UNIVERSITY OF UTAH UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES in *Nursing Research* *Leadership* DOCTORAL (Ph.D.) PROGRAM IN NURSING offered by THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH COLLEGE OF NURSING The central purpose of the program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree in nursing is to prepare competent researchers and scholars who can make significant contributions to nursing by advancing the theory, research and scientific-practice base of the discipline. Graduates of the program will be expected to: add to the body of nursing knowledge by systematically and critically studying nursing problems in an area of specialty; develop nursing theories to be tested in diverse contexts; and be capable of conducting independent and imaginative research studies. Nursing Educational Administration . This new and exciting program has been designed to prepare professional nurse administrators for leadership responsibilities in the field of educational administration. The goal of the program is to prepare nurse researchers and scholars who can make significant contributions to nursing by serving in administrative positions in complex educational organizations. Graduates of the program will be well-qualified lo serve in high ranking educational administration settings and contribute to research in the organizational behavior related to nursing. Note: There are no researc h specialties focused on specific age or developmental groupings in the College of Nursing. However , there are well-prepared faculty available to provide guidance for students whose research is focused on specific age groups within the context of the research specialty of choice. SUBFIELD RESEARCH SPECIALTIES OVERVIEW OF CURRICULUM Transcultural Nursing. Of special interest is the first transcultural nursing doctoral program in the world. This unique program is designed to prepare nurses to function as theoreticians, researchers, and leaders in a variety of transcultural nursing contexts. Students can incorporate ho listic nursing and study cross-cultural caring behaviors and nursing care phenomena from comparative and analytical perspectives as well as health care values, beliefs and practices. They can study ways to make nursing care culture-specific and identify the transcultural-universal featu res of nursing. Graduates will be prepared to do research, teaching and give nursing care in cultural settings in this country and abroad •- an exciting new opportunity in nursing. Psychosocial Nursing . The goal of this program is to advance the art and science of psychosocial nursing through guided systemat ic research and academic learning experiences. Coursework includes: an evaluation of past and current psychosocial nursing research and theories; study of critical issues in holistic humanistic health care and application in the mental health system; value analysis in psychosocial research. Graduates will be prepared to hold leadership positions in a variety of mental health and other health care and academic settings. Physiological Nursing . Dedicated to the development and improvement of patient care through scientifically-grounded research, the physiological nursing program prepares individuals to generate knowledge and theories to extend and develop the professional discipline. The generation of such knowledge and theory and its application to the problems of health care in persons with physiological dysfunction is the basis for ind ividual and overall curricular design. Phase I - Common Advanced Core Courses Focus is upon study of: 1)Theorie s of Nursing; 2)Research Methods in Nursing; 3) Advanced Nursing Trends , Problems and Issues ; and 4) Multidisciplinary Theories , Research Methods and Clinical Problems Relevant to Nursing Service. (Preliminary examinations are given at the end of this Phase .) Phase II - Subfield Research Specialties Focus is upon the student's chosen subfield of study in nursing. Th e subfields of study are: -Educational Administration ·Phys iologica l Nursing -Psychosocial Nursing -Transcultural Nursing (Qualifying examinations at the end of this Phase) Phase Ill - Research (Dissertation) Focus is upon research mastery of an original and independent investigation. The student will take the final Ph.D. examinations at the end of this Phase. The curriculum is designed as a three-year program of study in which students will be expected to do creative thinking, make discrim inatory judgements, construct nursing theories , and test the theories through systematic research investigations . Students must meet the requirements of the Graduate School . The curriculum has been designed to meet individual student needs and to meet requirements and behavioral expectations related to excellence of work , scholarship , theory development , independent and collaborative research, and systematic study of nursing phenomena . RESEARCH FACILITIES Excellent facilitie s for clinical/field study, research and teaching include the University Health Sciences Center and Hospital , comprehensive community health centers, general private hospitals, sate llite clinics, other community agencies, and U.S. and Federal Service Hospitals. In several nearby hospitals there are units specifically designed for nursing research studies. Field study areas are available for transcultural and educational administration students. THE UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE OF NURSING The University of Utah at Salt Lake City is the largest State University in the six-state lntermountain area. It was founded in 1850 and is located in the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. This exceptional setting offers ready access to the stimulating cultural, commercial and professional activities of the city and to the invigorating mountain outdoor life. Some of the world 's best skiing, hiking and camping are only 30 minutes away from the campus. fine music and art programs are also available. The College of Nursing is a rapidly growing and progressive nursing center in the country. It is the only State University offering graduate programs in the ln termountain Region. The College has nearly 100 faculty, 680 baccalaureate and graduate students, and an active continuing education program. The first master degree program was starte d in 1958 and the doctoral program in 1977. The College of Nursing has one of the most beautiful and functional buildings in the country with modern faculty offices, undergraduate and graduate laboratories, graduate seminar rooms, closed-circuit television facilities, research facil iti es, a human development laboratory and other research laboratories and facilities. In novative and new nursing clinics and other services have been established since 197 4. REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION Applicants for the Ph .D. Program in Nursing will be expected to meet all of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.) of the Graduate School at the Universi ty of Utah. Three to four years of approved graduate study by the student 's Supervisory Committee are required to complete the Ph.D. degree , and one of the last two years must be spent in continuous residence at this University . The following requirements shall be met for admission to the doctoral program: 1. Fulfill the general requirements for admission to the Graduate School , University of Utah. 2. Statement of applicant 's goals and interests for doctoral study. 3. Complete an NLN accredited baccalaureate degree in nursing. 4. Complete an NLN accredited master 's degree in nursing (or an equivalency). 5. Obtain a cumulative GPA ol 3.0 for undergraduate work and 3.3 in approved graduate study. 6. Minimum of 55 on the Miller Analogies Test. 7. Satisfactory Graduate Record Examination with Verbal and Quantitative total score of 1100 (with no less than 450 on either section). 8. Minimum of three letters from academicians addressing the applicant's general scholarsh ip abilities , academic achievements and research potential. 9. A sample of scholarship in writing and research. 10. Personal interview with faculty who will be working most directly with the student. In reviewing the applicant for admission to the Program, the faculty will take into consideration the applicant 's: (1) research interests , potentials, and goals ; (2) professional experiences and goals; (3) general scholarship and leadership qualities. Applicants will be selected upon the recommendation of the Doctoral Admissions Review Committee of the College of Nursing .
