Show THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH COLLEGE OF NURSING Graduate Program in Parent-Child Nursing Master of Science Graduate Office College of Nursing 2S South Medical Drive Salt Lake City, Utah 84112 THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH COLLEGE OF NURSING Master of Science Program in Parent-Child Nursing PROGRAM OF STUDY The graduate program in Parent-Child Nursing is designed to prepare selected professional nurses to fun ction as 1) generalists in parent-child nursing and / or 2) clinical specialists in nursemidwifery, perinatal nursing or child nursing, and / or 3 ) nurse-midwifery practitioners. RATIONALE The program has a research base which culminates in a thesis. Students are guided in professional development which includes critical thinking, synthesis and integration of knowledge, and practice in their areas of concentration . Leadership potential is maximized . Students are provided an opportunity to elect a functional area of study and practice. These areas include teaching and/ or supervision as well as supporting cognate courses. PURPOSE The graduate student is guided toward acquiring breadth and depth of knowledge in selected areas of study through the faculty-student supervisory process. Independent thinking and decisionmaking behaviors are supported as well as the development of student's individualistic style for becoming a systematic inquirer, a beginning theoretician and a creative intervenor in the promotion and maintenance of health. Therefore, it is expected that: a ) the graduate of the nurse-midwifery sp~cialty is prepared to manage the care of mothers and ba\)ies throughout the normal maternity ,y,\e, and is eligible to take the American College of Nurse-Midwives National Certification Examination h ) the perinatal specialist is prepared to provide advanced nursing and leadership in the care of normal and/or high risk families during the perinatal period. The student may choose to focus on either the mother or the neonate or both; and c ) the graduate of the child-nursing specialty is prepared to provide advanced nursing and leadership in the care of children in health and illness. Students may also select from a number of elective courses in the areas of teaching, supervision, administration, transcultural nursing and others. Seven quarters are required for nurse-midwifery students in order to meet requirements of the graduate school and certification by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. Nurse-Midwifery students are accepted for full-time study only. CLINICAL/ FIELD STUDIES MAJOR FACULTY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A variety of health care settings provide students an opportunity to develop clinical expertise, including primary care nursing clinics, health department clinics, physician offices, and outpatient departments within the University for student placement . Dr. Beryl Peters is the Program Director for the gradu ate program in Parent-Child Nursing. Other facult y, in specialty nursing areas and the College of Medicine, also assist with the program . Graduate admission requirements include the following : 1) Baccalaureate degree with an upper-division major m nursing, including field practice in public health and psychosocial nursing ; 2 ) Graduation from a nationally accredited College of Nursing with a cumulative GPA of "B" ( 3 .0 ) in undergraduate work; 3 ) Satisfactory achievement on: a ) Graduate Record Examination ( verbal and quantitative portions) ; b ) Miller Analogies Test ; 4 ) A course in elementary statistics; 5 ) Licensure as a registered nurse in a least one state and eligible for registration in Utah ; 6 ) A course in human embryology and human genetics are required for nurse-midwifery students.
