The studio where these objects convened, the gallery where they are exhibited, and the home I live in are on unceded traditional lands of the Timpanogos Ute, Goshute, and Northwestern Band of Shoshone Peoples. Objects and images included in this series are sourced from places that are also unceded traditional land of the Southern Paiute, Pahvant Ute, Ute Mountain Ute, Diné Bikéyah, Pueblos, and Eastern Shoshone Peoples. Despite treaties such as the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley, which guaranteed land-sovereignty to many of these tribes, a majority of their members have been displaced from their traditional lands by the U.S. Government and Latter- Day Saints Pioneers, my ancestors. Though many texts about Indigenous Peoples of this land place them in the past tense, it is important to know that they are still here, and their wisdom handed down for many generations could save our society from climate collapse. |
