HISTORIC SITE FORM (continuation) Union Pacific Railroad Underpass (81-152) This is a large, high one car concrete underpass built beneath the Union Pacific Railroad transcontinental tracks. The underpass was constructed in 1915 to allow Andrew Anderson, owner of the Anderson Fish Hatchery on the north side of the railroad, to access the ponds from his home on the south side of the railroad right-of-way. The ponds were originally constructed in 1907 prior to the time that Union Pacific laid a second railroad track through Uintah. When they built the new track it was necessary to accommodate Mr. Anderson's fish hatchery since he had prior right-of-access. The underpass is a large concrete arch structure poured in place using plank forms. There are sloping parallel concrete wing walls on the south side and flared wing walls on the north side. The structure is 17 feet 3 inches high by 15 feet 1 inch wide. The arch opening itself is 12 feet high by 15 feet 1 inch wide (Figure 1). A large date of "1915" is stamped into the concrete above the opening on the north side. According to Roger Roper (personal communication 1993), historian at the Utah Division of State History, this type of structure is somewhat uncommon in Utah since such underpasses were only built when unusual situations such as this demanded it. They were not regularly built features which also means the size and configuration of such structures were all different. References Cited: Roper, Roger 1993 Personal communication.
