I 5633 South 2700 West Roy Weber County ) UTAH STATE HISTORY 1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 3 9222 50010 9371 January 9, 1879, in Park City, one of six children born to Issac Rogers and Eunice Lestra Stewart (OSE 1965a), In 1915, Reuben and Ethel Greenwood moved their family to Roy where they engaged in farming. Reuben was an active member of the Weber County Beet Grower's Association for 25 years, serving as president of the association for a number of those years. In 1928, Mr. Greenwood was elected to the Weber County School Board. During his lifetime, Mr. Greenwood served as director of the Federal Land Bank and was a member the Roy City Council (OSE 1960). Reuben Greenwood was active in the LDS Church as well, becoming bishop of the Roy Ward in 1935. He held this position for seven years, being released in 1942 (Russell 1979: 188, 200). In 1948, the Greenwood's had the current residence built on a portion of the property they had purchased in 1914 ewCR 1914). Eleven years later, in 1959, they deeded the home and surrounding land to the daughter and son-in-law Gloria and Robert Barney (WCR 1959b). Reuben Percy Greenwood died of a heart attack one year later, on May 7, 1960 (OSE 1960). His wife, Ethel Rogers Greenwood, remained in the Roy area until her death on March 27, 1965 COSE 1965a). Gloria and Robert Barney retained the family home until 1967. At that time they sold it to Keith and Jean Fowers. The Fowers' maintained their residence at the current address until 1989, when they sold it to the current owners, Steven and Donna Spencer (WCR 1989a). 5633 South 2700 West (SJ-294) This property includes a vernacular block residence dating to 1941 (see Appendix A, Index to Photographs). There are no outbuildings associated with the property. Architectural Description The house on the property consists of a single story vernacular rectangular block residence, which was built in 1941 (WCA 1973j; see Appendix a, Figures 62-66). It measures 7.3 m wide by 7.9 m deep (24-by-26 ft). There is an attached wood frame carport on the structure's north side, measuring 4.7 m wide by 6.1 m deep (15.S-by-20 ft). The carport is supported by squared wooden post. Minor modifications to the structure include a rear addition and alterations to the carport, from a flat to a gable roof, which was completed in 1986 (WCA 1973j). The residence rests on a poured concrete foundation and has wood frame walls covered with aluminum siding, which simulates an historic clapboard siding. The gable roofhas asphalt shingles. All windows in the building are one-over-one double-hung wooden sashes windows. There are four windows on the east of the house, four on the northern exposure, and three on the west. There is a wooden panel door protected by an aluminum stonn door on the front of the house and also at the rear. A covered utility basement entry is located on the south side of the 29 house, under the carport. The entry is covered by an asphalt shingled shed roof, and the siding is the same as the house. Property History As mentioned, the residence at 5633 South 2700 West was built in 1941 (WCA 1973j). At that time, the property was owned by William Amasa (Amasa Baker) and Verlie Baker who had obtained it from the Egginton family in 1931 (WCR 1930; 1931 a; 1931 b). Prior to this transaction, the property had changed ownership three times since the issuance of the original land patent from the United States to Edward Bell in 1892 (WCR 1892). A combination of information obtained from both historical records and County Recorder's books suggests that the house was not built for William A. (Amasa) and Verlie Baker despite their owning the property at that time. It appears that the home was constructed by Marvin Venable, a local contractor, for Amasa Baker's parents, William Nathan and Jane Baker (WCR 1943c; Russell 1979:39). William Nathan Baker was born in Roy on March 8, 1873, the second son of William Evans Baker and Esther Cole Baker, the first settlers of Roy. During his youth, Amasa Baker, worked on his father's farm in the newly established community. This was an occupation he continued throughout his lifetime. In addition to farming, he worked for the Utah State Road Commission for 14 years and was a member of the Weber County Farm Bureau (OSE 1954). On December 20, 1894, he married Jane Hammon, daughter of Levi Byram and Martha Jane Belnap Hammon. Together they had eight children (Russell 1979:39). Later, Mrs. Baker became the first captain of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers chapter organized in Roy (aSE 1952). Amasa and Verlie Baker retained ownership of the home in which his parents lived until 1943. At that time, the house was officially deeded to William Nathan and Jane Hammon Baker. The William Nathan Bakers remained in the residence until Jane Baker's death on December 20, 1952, the date of her 58th wedding anniversary (aSE 1952). Ten days later, William Baker deeded the property to his daughter Norma B. Holley (WCR 1953b). William Nathan Baker died on January 2, 1954, at the age of 80 years (OSE 1954). One year later, in 1954, Ms. Holley sold the property to her niece and nephew-in-law, Norman W. and Marilyn Bennington (WCR 1954). In 1960, Verlie Baker purchased the property back from the Benningtons. Her husband, Amasa Baker, had passed away two years earlier in 1958 (Russell 1979:246). Mrs. Baker remained at the residence for 12 years, until her death in 1972. At that time, her children sold the property to Ronald W. and Ruth Halbert who lived there until 1985. The Halberts sold the residence to Mary M. Miller, who defaulted on the mortgage 3 years later. The property was turned over to the Administrator of the V.A. and was sold in 1989 to the current owners, Allen C. and Patricia Berry (WCR 1989b). 30 INDEX TO PHOTOGRAPHS Allen C. and Patricia Berry Property 5633 South 2700 West Roy Weber County Utah Documentation: 5 photographs (1996) Michael R.
