Use continuation sheets as necessary. This 1924 apartment complex is a Four-Unit Block with Art Deco Influence. It measures 49 ft (14.9 m) eastwest by 27 ft (8.2 m) north-south (Carter and Goss 1988:80, 175). The building is "C" shaped and has four separate entrances fronting on 30 th Street, one for each individual apartment. The building is I Y2 stories high with half ofthe basement above ground, allowing for larger windows and more light into the lower apartments. The basement is poured concrete and the exterior walls are clad in stucco inters paced between decorative brick work columns. The decorative brick work is influenced by the Art Deco style. There are four brick half columns on the front of the apartment building, two on either side of the "C" ends. Two shorter brick and stucco columns support a shed roof awning. The bricks, on all six columns, form quoins around the stucco on the column sides. There is also decorative brick work around the top and sides of the windows located on the protruding ends of the "C" shape. The entryway to each apartment is located in the center of the structure. There are two sets of wooden stairways leading up to each of the upper apartments and two poured concrete sets leading to the lower dwellings. Each stairway has square wood balusters with an handrail. The two upper stairways are supported by 4 by 4 in square wood posts. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Fenestration on the building is quite simple, consisting of paired one-over-one double hung windows with wood frames and concrete sills. Four of these windows are located on the front upper story and four on the front of the basement. The top % of the basement windows are above ground with the bottom % of the windows in window wells and stair wells. Two of the paired one-over-one double hung windows are located in the middle of the east and west walls. The flat roof is capped around the sides with a decorative single row of brick or wood. The covering of the flat roof is not visible, however, the shed roof awning is covered in asphalt shingles. Two chimneys extend up the exterior of the east and west walls and protrude through the roof line. The chimneys are clad in stucco with the exception of the chimney top, which is constructed offrre brick. 5. HISTORY This apartment complex was constructed in 1924 (Weber County Assessor [WCA] 1972). The builder is unknown, however, the property owner at the time of construction was Arvel Walter Porter (Weber County Recorder [WCR] 1923). The patent to the property was issued on August 2, 1872 to Lorin Farr, Mayor of Ogden (WCR 1872). The property changed hands several times until August 25, 1923 when Williard Porter deeded the property to his brother, Arvel Walter Porter (WCR 1923). Arvel Walter Porter was born September 3, 1896 in Pacheco, Mexico. He was the frrst son born to Arvel Wallace and Charlotte Carol Porter (Ogden Standard Examiner [OSE], 26 June 1980:9C col 5). Arvel Walter Porter's parents were originally from Porterville, Morgan County, Utah, but sometime before his birth they moved to Mexico. The family eventually moved back to Utah, settling in Blanding, San Juan County (FHL n.d.). Arvel Walter Porter served his country during World War I and after the war, married Rachel Anne Hardy on December 19, 1919 in the Salt Lake Temple (OSE 26 June 1980:9C col 5). Together they had two children (OSE 26 June 1980:9C col 5; OSE 30 November 1972: 120 col 7). Rachel Anne Hardy was born September 9, 1899 in Pacheco, Mexico, the daughter of Aaron B. and Marian Ann Hardy. Her family also moved to Blanding from Mexico (OSE 30 November 1972:120 col 7). One year after their marriage, Arvel and Rachel Porter moved to Ogden (OSE 30 November 1972: 120 col 7). Arvel Porter worked in Ogden as a mail carrier for the US Postal Service and Rachel Porter sold insurance for the Producers Life Insurance Co. (OSE 30 November 1972: 120 col 7; OSE 26 June 1980:9C col 5). In addition to these jobs, they also speculated in real-estate. In this project area the couple owned an apartment complex, a rental house and their own residence. Arvel and Rachel Porter deeded all three real-estate investments to the Colonial Building and Loan Association in 1933 (WCR 1933a). Since this was right at the apex of the Great Depression, it may indicate that the Porter's were forced to sell or lost their properties. At some point after this, Arvel and Rachel Porter were divorced (OSE 30 November 1972: 120 col 7; OSE 26 June 1980:9C col 5). On December 12, 1965, Arvel Porter married Pauline Malan Evans in Ogden, Utah. They later moved to Laguna Hills, California where Arvel Walter Porter died on June 24, 1980 (OSE 26 June 1980:9C col 5). Rachel Porter never remarried and remained in Ogden until her death on November 29, 1972 (OSE 30 November 1972: 120 col 7). In December 1933 the Colonial Building and Loan Association deeded the property to Inez M. Griffith (WCR 1933b) and three years later, Ms Griffith deeded the property to May Gibbons (WCR 1936). George and Bernice Gibbons deeded the property to Lola V. Morris in 1940 (WCR 1940). Lola V. Morris retained title to the property for five years at which time she deeded it to Fannie T. Lower (WCR 1945). The Lower family owned the property until 1967 when W. Duane Lower et. al. deeded the property to Harold W. Mahany et. al. (WCR 1967). In 1992, Harold W.
