Welcome to our 19th annual Asían American Hígh School Conference "RepresentASIAN" hosted by the Asían American Student Associatíon (MSA) at the University of Uta h. Navigating the complex question of who you are and what you want to do with your life can be daunting. 1hope this conference will seNe as a starting point in your college career and get you to ask questions about identity, education, social justice, and higher education. Along the way, 1hope you meet a few other students. Sorne of you may work after you graduate high school, others might jump right into college. Whatever you decide, 1hope you eventually pursue a degree in higher education as the experience will only amplify whatever your passions, skills, and motivations you have. What each of you will need to succeed is unique, but as I prepare to graduate, a few resounding points of advice stand out to me: First, do not be lazy in your social interactions. As the saying goes, you are the summation of the five closest people around you. Be sure to surround yourself with people who inspire you and can help you achieve your goals. You will be surprísed where sorne of the greatest connections you make come from, and you never know how far a social connection cango to help you in the future. Now is the time to create as many bridges as you can across the universíty. lt will be tremendously helpful. Second, ask far help. lt is incredible how common it is for students to keep their problems to themselves. 1guarantee you wíll not be able to get to where you want to go without the support of others. You may have done a lot of research on your own, or have been your High School's SBO presídent. But you need to acknowledge that you do not have ali the answers, and be willing to listen to the advíce of others. You will not regret the time and energy you put into seeking out new social groups and staff to assist you. Finally, do not be afraid to make mistakes. More dangerous, is the fear of trying. One of you reading this message will one day be a leader this in university and in the world. You are ali capa ble of doíng so, and I certainly hope many of you will. There is certainly a need for more Asían American leadership in both the university, and the nation. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us for questions or advice, and 1 hope you enjoy yourself at our conference, as well as learn something valuable.
