Description Patient satisfaction following cataract surgery is NOT correlated with improvements in visual function. The only factor that appears to correlate with patient satisfaction is their pre-operative expectations (1). Because cataract surgery cannot compensate for any visual function that's been lost to optic neuritis, neuro-ophthalmologists can play an important role in helping set expectations before surgery: It's important for patients to understand that removing their cataract and implanting an artificial lens will improve that portion of visual function that may be ascribed to their cataract, but that it will not somehow compensate for that portion of visual function that's been lost to optic neuritis.
