Description Non-image-forming photoreception, driven by intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) is critical in functions like circadian entrainment and the modulation of sleep/alertness, and mood. Disruption of sleep and circadian rhythms is one of the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but little is known about the role of ipRGCs in this process. Our study aimed to evaluate the pathophysiology of the disrupted circadian connections in AD, by exploring structural and functional characteristics of ipRGCs in postmortem specimens from patients with various degrees of AD neuropathological alterations.
