Garff and his brothers Regina! and Aaron, who had been leading the Co-op Meat Market uptown, announced the opening of Garff Brother' s Sanitary Market at 155 West Main. Two weeks later the local newspaper announced that for the first time in Lehi' s history ice was frozen into blocks during tLc; summertime "while the thermometer was standing at between 80 and 90 in the shade." Unfortunately the ammonia used in the refrigeration system leaked into the ice, permeated the meat, and made it inedible. The firm tried to recover costs by leasing to Scown Brothers Market. But they eventually were foreclosed by Pacific States Savings, who resold the property to Ted. Ole and Ernest Larsen. Larsen Brothers was a very successful business. Ern Larsen remained the sole proprietor until 1956, when he was joined by his son Ralph (Gus) Larsen. They moved to larger quarters in 1956 and used the old place as a warehouse. From 1960-1963, 155 West Main was leased to Ardell Zimmerman who maintained her Style Art Beauty Salon there. JoAnn Zimmerman operated Jo' s Fashions on the premises from 19721978. Timberline Hunter' s Supply occupied the rear portion of the building from 1973 to 1979. In 1971 Greenwood Carpets (Ken, Dennis, Opal Greenwood) purchased the building and constructed a new facility to the east for a convenience store. In 1982, Max and Ruby Ray and their sonin-law, Randy Phillips, established Sounds Easy, a video rental outlet, in the building. Since then the facility has continuously housed various beauty salons. The place is currently called Hi-D '-S Salon. One of the most boisterous chapters in Lehi history is the saloon and liquor issue. Monuments to intemperance have prevailed downtown since the earliest days of Main Street. During the years ) 885-) 890, ) 898-) 900, and 1910-1934 (when prohibition prevailed), Lehi was as dry as the Arabian desert. It was during "wet years" that the roughly half dozen saloons were built downtown. The Salt Lake Brewery Company, under the local management of J Edward Campbell, was the victim of Lehi' s 1898 Political wars of the prohibition ordinance. previous fall had strategists debating prohibition (the Democrat position) versus high licensing fees (the Republican platform). Campbell, confident Republican sentiment would prevail, began constructing a large building on property fronting at 155 West Main. The foundation was just completed when the 3 Leh; Banner bolded November 1897 "PROHIBmON WINS" across its front page. The brewery defaulted on the property transaction so for the next five years it was an eyesore. In 1903 owner Jonas Holdsworth sold the site to William T. Ball, who began constructing a large brick building on the old stone foundation. Meanwhile, Lehi voters had thrown out the Democrats and prohibition. The Ball building's first tenant was Gus Slade. He maintained his Senate Saloon there until April of 1906, and then moved elsewhere. He moved back in 1908, renaming the place The New Log Cabin Saloon . When prohibition became law in Utah County on 1 January 1910, the New Log Cabin faded into history. In October of the following year the spacious building was converted into the Isis Theatre. The theatre only remained in business for a few months in 1911. In February of 1913 May Comer and other family members leased the place for a restaurant. ice cream parlor, and confectionery. 76 155 West Main in 1908 ,- . 155 West Main today ~-- .. 75 A GUIDE TO LEHI CITY'S HISTORICAL SITES AND PLACES Published by the Lehi H is(()rical Preservation Commission 1997 funded h~' ~ranls from the t'l:l h State Historical Society an d I ,c hi ('ityCurporation CLIF • PhOl;c 328,867H Salt Lake City, Utah 8~111 lEHI FREE PRESS Ll'hi. Larsen Brothers Market--Architectural Description This one story brick building is a late example of the Nineteenth Ce~ tury Commercial Style. The stepped back flat roof and the ~ cVs-l\" d divisions of the facade which include a window bay with a recessed central entrance, a band for advertising, and a corbeled cornice line, are characteristic of that style. Particularly notable is the well preserved window bay. It is framed by a simple cornice with dentils on the frieze and by side ~7alls which are accented with corbeled projections. Having been divided into three distinct sections, the window bay consists of: a line of transoms with lozenge shaped stickwork; a band of plate glass show windows broken in the center by double doors capped by square transoms; and a series of recessed panels. Two long narrow columns frame the recessed entrance area. No alterations have been made which affect the integrity of the exterior of this building. Statement of Architectural Significance This building is significant as the best preserved commercial building in Lehi which was designed in the Nineteenth Century Commercial Style. The late use of that style in this building may indicate that a small, rural community such as Lehi was either not exposed to corrrrnon twentieth century trends or was slower to accept them.
