Two years later they completely remodeled the building and convened it into a Western Auto Store. A. R Larsen bought them out in 1966. From 1973 Wltil 1978 the facility was Hayward's Western Auto, owned by Wilson and Faye Hayward. It then became Cash's Western Auto, owned by Guy and Mary Ellen Cash.. FQI' the first three years of operation Cash's remained at 2 West Main They opened in new quarters at 286 East Main in 1981 . After the Cash's vacated 2 West Main it became Emo & Cal's Big A Auto Parts (1982-83), and then Calvin and Jeanine Cook's The Wear House (1985-86). Beginning in early 1987 it became the home of Pioneer Electronics, owned by Paul Wbidock. This historic structure, owned by Val and Carolyn Player today, has been vacant for most of the 19905. Missourian Jeremiah E. Cotter came to Lehi at the tum-of-the-centwy to marry local beauty Florence Smith. In mid-1903 when a fire damaged much of his stock in the Robinson Comer Grocery, 'a disheartened 1. A Robinson sold out to Cotter. In early 1910 Cotter purchased the corner lot at 2 West Main from David Smith, obtained a mortgage from the former owner, and built a substantial brick building to bouse his grocery. Although the Cotter building was the first structure on the site, other business transactions had taken place there earlier. In the fall of 1895 Frank Yearance and Gay Whipple established a merry-gorOWld there. For many seasons it brought high glee to yOWlg and old alike. Sarah T. Evans purchased the comer lot in 1901 and leased it to W. E. Racker, proprietor or Racker's Mercantile. Racker established a lumber and coal yard on the property. After Cotter's Grocery went of business in 1919, the store became a succession of other groceries: Goates Brothers' Grocery-Leo and Warren Goates (1919-21); People's Meat and Grocery-1. W . Gardner, Everett Turner, and Karren Turner (1921-24); Edward Southwick's Grocery & Hardware (1924-25); and Booth Brothers GroceryEdward (Ted) and 1. B. Booth (1926-29). When Booth Brother's called it quits, 2 West Main became Clark's Cash Store, owned by H. Winfield Clark from 1930-31 . The place was afterwards Van's Cash and Carry-Alben and Dean Van Wagoner; followed by Page Store-Harry E. Page (1934). Since 1936 the Cotter building, when occupied, has almost always been a Hardware store: Christensen's (1936-39); Wane Christensen's Cabinet Shop (1939-40), Lehi HardwareAlva/Glen Wing (1940-41), and Main Hardware-Tom Woffinden (1941-44). The Woffindens built an addition onto the north which then became living quarters for the family. Roben 1. and Marguerite Smith established Smith Hardware at the same location in 1945, and also lived in the rear apartment. 84 Cotters Store c. 1910 2 West Main in 1991 83 A GUIDE TO LEHI CITY'S HISTORICAL SITES AND PLACES Published by the Lehi His£Orical Preservatio n Commission 1997 fu nded t ull '''Hj grants from the lIislorical Society I. <hi Cit) ('orporation h~ ~Iall' APR - 3 1001 UTAH PRESS ASSOCIA TlON CLIPPING SERVICE Phone 328-8678 Salt Lake Cily.
